A man has been convicted of one of the most heinous crimes: raping, and killing a little girl. Some say they had no idea what twisted acts he was capable of committing. But something he did years before indicates differently.
Over 20 years before he raped and murdered an 8-year-old girl in Florida, Donald Smith was convicted in court of attempting to kidnap a 13-year-old girl.
The 62-year-old was found guilty of the rape and murder of Cherish Perrywinkle in 2013. It is not known whether he will receive the death penalty or spend the rest of his life in prison.
In court on Tuesday, a woman told her story of how Donald Smith had almost abducted her back in 1992.
Carrie Ann Buck was 13-years-old and walking to a friend’s house one Sunday morning when Smith, 36 at the time, drove alongside her in a van.
“He told me to get the f–k in the van,” she said.
She then said that she hid inside a tube slide at a children’s playground. Terrifying.
Donald Smith was found guilty of murdering 8-year-old Cherish Perrywinkle, after police say he took her mother and sisters to Walmart under the premise that he would buy them clothes and a meal. Instead, he left with Cherish.
Her body was later found, mutilated. Cherish endured a nightmare that no child should.
He had only been out of jail for three weeks before he murdered Cherish. The jury is currently deliberating on sentencing Smith to death.
