Two Sacramento firefighters have been injured when a burning car exploded Friday, the fire department said.
Capt. Greggory Quick and firefighter Mark Robertson were taken to the UC Davis Medical Center to be treated for burns.
Quick remains in the hospital Saturday with burns to his face and hand, the Fire Department said. Robertson was released after being treated for minor burns.
Firefighters responded to reports of a car fire in the 6300 block of Ehrhardt Avenue when the unoccupied car had “some sort of explosion,” fire officials said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
According to Firehouse.com, more firefighters are dying in the past few years than in recent years. “After several years on a downswing, on-duty firefighter deaths were up in 2013. There were 101 on-duty firefighter fatalities last year, including eight classified as Hometown Heroes, according to statistics compiled by the USFA. During 2012, records show 83 firefighters died while serving their communities.Jan 6, 2014.”
So far, 35 firefighters have been killed in 2017.
